Tips for Leading in the Supply Chain

1.  Leverage Supplier Strengths.  Develop a supply chain that leverages supplier's strengths.  Think again when you want a one-stop shopping experience.  It may be convenient but will it provide a strong supply chain which will support your company's growth?

2.  Consolidate Supply.  Many buyers think having multiple sources for the same part provides protection against short supply and leverage to achieve lower prices.  Sometimes it does.  But consider carefully the impact of a such a decision on the structure of your supply chain.  Are you loosing the leverage of combined volume?  When supplies are short will many suppliers be as loyal as the one supplier who has all your business and considers their business success dependent on yours?

3.  Suppliers are People.  Never forget that it is the personal relationships you build that are the glue for your supply chain.  Yell at a supplier and the hard feelings may weaken the chain for a long long time to come.  Express respect and sincere appreciation and you will build trust, loyalty, strength and motivation to make you successful.  In the end, an enduring supply chain will look up to you as the leader to emulate.
